If your website shows “can’t be found”, it usually means the browser can’t locate or connect to your site. The exact cause depends on the full error message (e.g., DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN, 404 Not Found, Server Not Found, etc.), but here are the most common reasons:
Domain name issues
- Domain name expired. Your domain name registration may have lapsed
- DNS not configured correctly. DNS records updated recently? Changes can cause issues if not done correctly
- DNS propagation delay. Name Server changes can take up to 24 hours. Zone records usually update quicker depending on TTL. Our default TTL is 1 hour
- Domain not connected to web sites hosting account. This is prevelant with hosting providers such as WIX, SquareSpace and others that require your domain be added to the hosting account.
Hosting Problems
- Hosting account suspended.
- Hosting server is down
- Hosting Plan expired
- Website files deleted or corrupted
- Server misconfiguration
Website not published.
If you use platforms like, WIX, SquareSpace, Weebly, Shopify and other website building platforms possible reasons could be
- Site not published. If the site isn't published, it won't be available for the public to see
- Domain not connected or verified to their platform
- SSL certificate not activated
Specific Error meanings
- 404 Not Found: Website exists, but the specific page doesn't
- Server Not Found / NXDOMAIN: Domain isn't pointing anywhere. Usually no A record in the domains DNS records
- This site can't be reached: Server offline or firewall blocking
- ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT: Hosting server not responding.
