General steps to set up email on an email client

Below are instructions on how to set up mailboxes on most email clients such as Outlook, thunderbird and iPhone. Each client might have a different interface but the settings are generally the same for each client. Follow the below instructions to help get set up!

1. Get your email details

You'll need

  • Your full email address (e.g. yourname@yourdomain.co.nz)
  • Email account password (set in your 1st domains mail manager. This is different to your account password and specifically set for the email address when created)

2. Incoming and Outgoing Mail server settings
These are the typical settings for 1st Domains' mail servers.

Setting Value
Incoming Mail Server mail.1stdomains.co.nz
Outgoing Mail Server mail.1stdomains.co.nz
IMAP Port (incoming) 993 (SSL)
POP3 Port (incoming) 995 (SSL)
Outgoing Port (SMTP) 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
Authentication (Outgoing) Yes, use same settings as incoming
Encryption SSL/ TLS or STARTTLS

Choose IMAP if you want to sync emails across other devices (recommend) or POP3 if you want to download them to one device only.

3. Email Client configuration

Example (for Outlook or Thunderbird)

  • Email Address: yourname@yourdomain.co.nz
  • Username: Same as email address
  • Password: Your email password set when mailbox was created
  • Incoming Server: mail.1stdomains.co.nz (port 993, SSL for IMAP)
  • Outgoing Server (SMTP): mail.1stdomains.co.nz (port 465 or 587, SSL/TLS)
  • Require Authentication: Yes

If you have forgotten the password to your email password, you can reset it via your 1st domains account. Here are some instructions on how to do that.
