Here are clear, up-to-date instructions for adding an IMAP account in both the latest Outlook (New Outlook) and Outlook for Microsoft 365 (Classic Outlook)—the steps are slightly different depending on which version you’re using. On the latest versions you may be asked to enter a "App Password", if you get this message please use Method 2 to set up. You can also switch back to the latest version interface once the email has been added.
Open Outlook
- Launch Microsoft Outlook
Method 1: (Latest version)
Steps:
- Click "Settings" (⚙️) in the top right
- Go to Accounts -> Email accounts
- Click "Add account"
- Enter your email address and click "Continue"
- Choose "Advanced Setup", this is the preferred option.
- Select "IMAP"
- Enter:
- Incoming Server: mail.1stdomains.co.nz
- Port: 993 (SSL/TLS)
- Outgoing Server: mail.1stdomains.co.nz
- Port: 465 or 587
- Enter Password then click on "Connect"
Outlook may try to automatic detection first, but you can override this with the manual IMAP setup.
Method 2: Outlook for Microsoft 365 (Classic Outlook)
This is still widely used and often easier for IMAP.
Steps:
- Go to "File" and then click on "Add Account"
- Enter your email
- Tick “Let me set up my account manually”
- Click "Connect"
- Choose IMAP and Enter:
- Incoming Server: mail.1stdomains.co.nz
- Port: 993 (SSL/TLS)
- Outgoing Server: mail.1stdomains.co.nz
- Port: 465 or 587
- Click "Next"
- Enter password and click on "Connect"
Outlook may pre-fill some settings, but you can edit them if needed.
New Outlook quirks:
IMAP support exists but can be less reliable
If problems occur, try Classic Outlook (temporary workaround)
